Within the next 12 years, older adults will make up nearly 20% of the population in Guilford County. This has led Senior Services Roundtable, a group comprised of agencies and organizations that serve older adults in Guilford County, to promote the advantages of making our area a Senior-Friendly Community, because what’s good for seniors is good for people of all ages.

As a part of the Senior Services Roundtable, Shepherd’s Center diligently seeks to provide lifelong learning experiences, satisfying community service, and attain as high a quality of life as possible for all of Greensboro’s seniors, as determined by the seniors themselves. Programs like Adventures in Learning, Shepherd’s Wheels, Home Handymen, SeniorNet and CarePartners provide great flexibility and opportunity for older adults to delve into areas in which they have a special interest or skill, see a clear community need, or define a specific problem related to seniors.

The major components of livability and senior-friendliness that the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) is encouraging communities to consider for the aging population are: Physical and Accessible Environment, Healthy Aging, Economic Security, Technology, Safety and Security, Public Accountability and Responsiveness, Social and Cultural Opportunity, Access and Choice in Services and Support.

The mission of Shepherd’s Center, “Older adults helping older adults pursue independent and active lives of quality, enriched and supported by learning and service activities in caring fellowship” is clearly a strong component of a Senior-Friendly Community. As defined by DAAS, a senior-friendly community offers a wide range of social and economic opportunities and supports for all citizens, including seniors. It promotes positive intergenerational relations and acknowledges the primary role that families, friends, and neighbors play in the lives of older adults. It values seniors’ contributions and considers their needs and interests in physical and community planning. A Senior-Friendly Community respects and supports seniors’ desire and efforts to live independently. These communities also enhance safety, promote positive intergenerational relations, and provide opportunities for seniors to make even greater contributions to the public. Having a Senior-Friendly Community means a better society for all of us.

A recent project of the Guilford County Senior Services Roundtable was the development of ‘Pathways and Protocols,’ a web-based guide providing easy access to information about programs and services available for older adults and their caregivers. For more information about ‘Pathways and Protocols’ call Senior Resources of Guilford at 336-373-4816 or visit http://senior-resources-guilford.org/pages/pathways2.cfm.
